Delhi’s Power Demand Reaches Record High, Nears 7,000 MW Mark

Date:

New Delhi:  On Friday afternoon, as temperatures soared, Delhi recorded its highest peak power demand of the summer season to date, reaching an impressive 6,867 MW at 3:17 PM, according to real-time data from the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).

This year, experts anticipate that Delhi’s peak power demand could surpass 9,000 MW. For context, the previous all-time high for the national capital was recorded at 8,656 MW in 2024.

The BSES discoms—BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL)—successfully managed to meet peak demands of 3,004 MW and 1,479 MW, respectively, within their service areas. Meanwhile, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) effectively catered to a peak demand of 2,045 MW on the same day.

TPDDL has implemented a comprehensive strategy to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, utilizing a multi-faceted approach that includes bilateral agreements, reserve shutdowns, and power exchanges.

Last year marked a significant milestone for Delhi, as the peak power demand exceeded 8,000 MW for the first time.

The BSES discoms are well-prepared to provide reliable power to over 5 million consumers and 20 million residents across South, West, East, and Central Delhi. Their proactive measures include long-term purchase agreements, banking arrangements with other states, and the deployment of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to accurately predict power demand.

As the summer progresses, these efforts will be crucial in ensuring that Delhi’s energy needs are met efficiently and sustainably.
