New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formally requested a response from the Delhi government and other pertinent authorities concerning a petition that underscores the health and environmental risks associated with the feeding of pigeons.
A bench led by NGT Chairperson Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A. Senthil Vel remarked, “The petitioners assert that the feeding and proliferation of pigeons result in droppings accumulating on footpaths, pavements, and traffic islands throughout the National Capital Region (NCR). When these feeding areas are cleaned, toxic particles from the dried droppings mix with dust, contributing to environmental pollution and posing serious health risks.”
The petition further alleges that exposure to pigeon droppings can lead to “serious lung diseases,” including hypersensitivity pneumonitis, which may result in lung scarring and breathing difficulties.

In its order dated May 29, the tribunal acknowledged, “The original application raises significant concerns regarding compliance with environmental regulations.” Consequently, the tribunal has mandated that notice be issued to the respondents, requiring them to submit their responses or replies in the form of an affidavit.
The respondents include the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Works Department, and other relevant entities.
A hearing is scheduled for October 8, where these critical issues will be addressed.
