New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has solidified its influence within the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by winning eight out of the twelve zonal committees in the internal elections held on Monday. Additionally, the party secured a significant mandate in the Standing Committee, the MCD’s highest decision-making body.
In the elections, one representative from both the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was elected to the 18-member Standing Committee, resulting in a total of ten BJP members and granting the party a clear majority. AAP’s Rafia Mahir emerged victorious from the City Sadar-Paharganj Zone, while BJP’s Jagmohan Mehlawat claimed victory in the South Zone.

The MCD comprises twelve ward committees, with the BJP now controlling eight and the AAP holding four. The BJP also maintains its own mayor within the corporation.

The BJP’s victories include the Najafgarh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, South Zone, Keshav Puram, Civil Line, Narela, and Central zones, while the AAP secured the Rohini, Karol Bagh, West, and City Sadar-Paharganj zones.
In response to the election results, the BJP celebrated its success, attributing it to a growing discontent among AAP councillors. “Winning chairmanship in eight zones, including South Delhi, along with an additional victory in the Standing Committee elections and the deputy chairmanship in the Rohini zone, clearly reflects the increasing dissatisfaction among AAP’s municipal councillors towards their party leadership,” stated Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced that, despite a recent factional split, it successfully secured victories in four out of five zones in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.
“In the MCD elections, the Aam Aadmi Party has triumphed in the West Zone, City Sadar Zone, Karol Bagh Zone, and Rohini Zone. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that 15 councillors departed from our party to form a new group with the backing of the BJP. Nevertheless, we have maintained control over four out of five zones,” stated Saurabh Bharadwaj, President of the AAP Delhi unit, in a post on X.
“I am proud to share that those who left AAP to establish a new faction, receiving open support from the BJP, were unable to secure a victory in any zone,” he added.
Previously, 16 councillors from AAP broke away to form the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP) and contested in the zonal committee elections; however, none of their candidates were successful.
