New Delhi: The Delhi Police has notified the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding an incident involving an embassy staff member from a Western European nation who allegedly affixed “wanted” posters of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Chanakyapuri area. This information was confirmed by an official on Tuesday.
The incident was first reported around 7:30 AM on May 29, when officers from the Chanakyapuri Police Station discovered two posters displayed on electricity poles near the Carmel Convent School on Malcha Marg and the American Embassy School.
Chanakyapuri, known for housing numerous embassies and international institutions, is under heightened surveillance due to its diplomatic significance.
“The beat officers promptly alerted senior officials, who issued directives for the immediate removal of the posters,” stated a senior police officer.
In response, police teams initiated an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage to identify the individual responsible for the act.
“Upon examining the footage, investigators observed a man dressed in a blue shirt and black trousers arriving on a bicycle at approximately 5:30 AM. He was seen placing a poster on an electricity pole. Further analysis of the footage allowed investigators to trace his movements to a residential flat on Sardar Patel Marg,” the officer explained.
A police team subsequently visited the residence and confirmed that the occupant is an employee at the embassy of a Western European nation.
“While the individual’s details were recorded, no further action was taken due to diplomatic immunity,” the officer added.
Given the sensitive nature of the situation and the diplomatic status of the individual involved, the Delhi Police opted to escalate the matter. A comprehensive report was prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which is anticipated to collaborate with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to determine the appropriate course of action, according to police sources.
“The issue is currently being addressed at the highest levels of authority. Senior officers from the New Delhi range have submitted a comprehensive report to police headquarters, which was subsequently forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) last week. A source indicated that a response from the ministry is still pending.
The police have assured the public that stringent surveillance measures remain in place in the Chanakyapuri area to prevent any potential incidents.
Despite multiple attempts to reach the Delhi Police spokesperson via calls and messages, no response has been received.”
