Temperatures Drop as Monsoon Gains Strength in Delhi-NCR; Rain Offers Respite from Summer Heat

Date:

New Delhi: Temperatures dipped sharply across the national capital on Monday as the southwest monsoon strengthened its grip over Delhi-NCR, delivering light rainfall and overcast skies that brought much-needed relief from weeks of intense summer h eat.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), both maximum and minimum temperatures fell well below seasonal norms. Safdarjung, the city’s main weather station, recorded a maximum of 30.6°C, nearly 7°C below normal, while the minimum settled at 24°C, also 4°C under the average for this time of year.

Rainfall was recorded in several parts of Delhi, with Palam logging 14.4 mm and Ayanagar topping the chart with 20 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Humidity levels soared, reaching 100% over the past 24 hours.

The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and occasional thunderstorms to persist for the next several days. The prevailing conditions are attributed to an active monsoon trough crossing through Delhi and cyclonic circulation over south Rajasthan and north Gujarat.

Over the coming week, temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 34°C, with no heatwave conditions likely. Light rainfall is forecast to continue across all districts of Delhi-NCR till July 6.

Easterly winds, blowing at 15–20 kmph, are contributing to the cooling effect, IMD officials said, adding that the current pattern aligns with a typical early monsoon phase.

The ongoing wet spell is likely to provide continued relief to residents who have been grappling with extreme heat and poor air quality in recent weeks.
