MCD| Narang Questions Delhi BJP Mayor’s Dual Role, Alleges Breach of Ethical Standards

Date:

New Delhi: Ankush Narang, the Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday of consistently undermining the effective functioning of the civic body during the tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He characterized the BJP’s actions as introducing “negative energy” and failing to engage constructively in House proceedings.

During a press conference, Narang highlighted that the House convened for five hours on Wednesday after a hiatus of nearly two and a half years, attributing this positive development to the proactive approach of AAP councillors.

“We raised questions and voiced objections where necessary, but we ensured that the House continued to function. In contrast, BJP members previously resorted to disruptive tactics, such as carrying black placards,” he stated.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh or other councillors regarding Narang’s allegations.

Reflecting on past sessions, Narang asserted that BJP councillors showed little interest in meaningful dialogue or addressing the concerns of Delhi residents. “Even during sessions led by a female mayor, instances of broken microphones occurred, highlighting the BJP’s blatant disregard for democratic decorum,” he remarked.

Narang further claimed that AAP’s persistent opposition to recent user charges prompted the BJP to introduce a private member bill in the House to address public grievances.

“They are attempting to take credit for this initiative, but it was our party that stood with the people and protested against these charges,” he emphasized.

“We are not concerned about who receives the credit; our commitment to advocating for the citizens will remain unwavering,” he concluded.

Narang further stated that he had written a letter to the mayor and raised a pertinent question during the recent press conference. He inquired why, despite being appointed as the Mayor of Delhi, the individual had not resigned from his position as a member of the Standing Committee. Narang characterized this situation as a breach of both protocol and ethical standards.

“This has never occurred in the history of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). On moral grounds, he should have resigned on his very first day in office,” Narang asserted. He continued, “What is preventing him from stepping down? Is it personal interest or greed that compels him to cling to this position?”

Last month, the MCD elections took place, resulting in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) establishing its “triple-engine” government in the national capital, with Singh being elected as the mayor.
