New Delhi, June 5: In one of its biggest enforcement drives in recent years, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has demolished 82 properties and sealed 43 properties across the capital since June 1 as part of a citywide crackdown on unauthorized construction and violations of building bylaws.
The action follows directions issued by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the aftermath of the deadly Malviya Nagar fire tragedy, which raised serious concerns about illegal constructions and fire safety compliance across Delhi.
According to MCD, more than 150 notices, sealing notices and demolition orders have also been issued to property owners for misuse of premises and violations of building regulations.
South Delhi Under Special Focus
The South Zone witnessed one of the most extensive enforcement operations. MCD identified more than 12 bed-and-breakfast guest houses operating in violation of building bylaws in Hauz Rani during a joint inspection conducted with other agencies.
Officials also identified 32 properties in Said-ul-Ajaib and nine properties in Khirki Extension for alleged violations of approved building norms.
During a major operation conducted on Friday, MCD sealed five guest houses in Hauz Rani, including Green Residency, Venue Inn, Sky Inn and Mikasa Inn. One property in Khirki Extension was demolished and sealed, while eight properties in Said-ul-Ajaib faced demolition and sealing action.
The civic body said further enforcement action is being planned against the remaining identified properties in the coming days.
Action Across Delhi
Besides South Delhi, demolition drives were conducted against seven unauthorized properties in the Civil Lines Zone and eight properties in the Narela Zone.
In Savitri Nagar, Sainik Farm and Khanpur, action was taken against three properties, while three basements operating as libraries in violation of regulations were sealed in Gautam Nagar.
MCD officials said areas found vulnerable to unauthorized construction and illegal commercial activity are being kept under constant surveillance to prevent further violations.
Survey of Illegal Buildings Underway
The corporation has also launched a fresh survey across all municipal zones to identify residential and commercial buildings violating building bylaws.
Officials warned that illegal constructions, unauthorized guest houses and misuse of properties will attract strict action under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, Master Plan Delhi-2021 and Unified Building Bye-Laws-2016.
Stronger Action Ahead
MCD stated that demolition and sealing drives will be intensified in the coming weeks and that no unauthorized construction will be allowed to continue.
The civic body appealed to residents and property owners not to engage in illegal construction activities, warning that violations could lead to demolition, sealing and other legal consequences.
MCD reiterated that ensuring public safety and strict enforcement of building regulations remains a top priority, particularly after the Malviya Nagar fire incident highlighted the risks posed by unauthorized structures operating in violation of safety norms.
