Delhi’s Swift Justice: Tis Hazari Court Sentences Rapist to Life in Prison Just 18 Days After Case Filed

Date:

NEW DELHI: In a swift and significant ruling, the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi has sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for the horrific crime of raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl. Remarkably, the court reached this verdict just 18 days after the case was filed.

The disturbing events came to light on February 25, 2025, when the young girl was rushed to a hospital due to severe abdominal pain. Medical examinations revealed that she was in labor, and she gave birth shortly thereafter. This tragic situation prompted her family to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the Nihal Vihar police station.

Following a thorough investigation, the case was officially registered on March 28. The court delivered its verdict on April 15, and the sentence was finalized the next day, condemning the perpetrator to life in prison under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Additional Sessions Judge Babita Puniya emphasized the severity of the crime, highlighting the alarming age gap between the accused and the victim—nearly three decades. This factor, she noted, aggravated the situation, as the man had taken advantage of the girl’s vulnerability. He was a familiar face in her home, often referred to as ‘uncle’ by the child, which made his actions all the more deplorable.

In her remarks, Judge Puniya reflected on the profound physical and psychological trauma the girl endured, especially during childbirth at such a young age. Recognizing the immense suffering caused by this long-term abuse, the court ordered that the survivor be granted ₹19.5 lakh in compensation. While no amount of money can truly heal the emotional scars, the court hopes this support will help the young girl pursue education or develop skills for a brighter future. Among the total compensation, ₹2 lakh was specifically allocated for mental injury, and ₹4 lakh was designated for the trauma associated with her pregnancy.

This case underscores the urgent need for protective measures and support for vulnerable children, as well as the judicial system’s commitment to holding offenders accountable.
