New Delhi: A 76-year-old man was killed in a tragic early-morning road accident near Gazipur Village in East Delhi after a speeding Scorpio allegedly lost control and mounted the footpath along NH-24.
According to Delhi Police, a PCR call regarding a fatal accident was received around 6 AM at Police Station Gazipur and subsequently transferred to Patparganj Industrial Area (PIA) Police Station. The accident occurred near a petrol pump on the service road of NH-24.
On reaching the spot, police found a black Scorpio in a damaged condition on the footpath. An elderly pedestrian, later identified as Paik Karmai (76), was found critically injured after being struck by the vehicle. He was declared dead.
Preliminary inquiry suggests the SUV hit the divider separating the main carriageway and the service road, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then skidded onto the footpath, hitting the victim. Another parked vehicle nearby also sustained damage in the impact.
The deceased, originally from West Bengal and currently residing in Gazipur Village, was employed at the Flower Mandi in Gazipur. He was reportedly heading to work with two colleagues at the time of the incident.
Police apprehended the driver, identified as Shrey Kumar (26), a resident of Noida, Uttar Pradesh, at the scene. However, other occupants of the vehicle allegedly fled before police arrived.
The forensic team examined the crime scene, and the body was shifted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for post-mortem formalities. A case has been registered at PS PIA, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and identify the absconding occupants.
Authorities are also examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments to reconstruct the crash and assess whether overspeeding or negligence played a role in the fatal accident.
