After Malviya Nagar Fire, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma Seeks Delhi-Wide Fire Safety Compliance Drive

Date:

New Delhi, June 4: In the aftermath of the devastating Malviya Nagar fire tragedy, Delhi Municipal Corporation Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma has written to the MCD Commissioner, urging the launch of a special citywide fire safety compliance campaign across the national capital.

In her letter, Sharma emphasized that the recent incident has raised serious concerns regarding adherence to fire safety norms and the preparedness of buildings to respond to emergencies.

She called for priority inspections of all categories of buildings falling under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to verify compliance with prescribed fire safety standards.

The Standing Committee Chairperson also directed officials to identify buildings that may pose a threat to public safety due to inadequate fire safety measures, unauthorized construction, structural violations or other risk factors. The exercise is expected to be carried out in coordination with the Building Department.

Sharma said the campaign should focus on preventing future tragedies by ensuring that vulnerable structures are identified and corrective measures are taken without delay.

In addition, she has sought a detailed report on the Malviya Nagar fire incident within three days. The report is expected to cover all aspects of the tragedy, including the condition of the building, ownership details, compliance with fire safety regulations and any negligence that may have contributed to the incident.

“The safety of citizens is our foremost priority, and any lapse in this regard will be treated with utmost seriousness,” Sharma stated.

She further said that the Municipal Corporation would take swift and effective action to strengthen fire safety enforcement and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

The demand for a citywide compliance drive comes amid growing concerns over fire safety violations, unauthorized constructions and enforcement gaps following the Malviya Nagar tragedy, which has triggered multiple reviews and inspections by civic and government authorities.
