Delhi Transport Corporation Revamps Electric Bus Hire Rates to Boost Financial Sustainability

Date:

New Delhi: In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its financial sustainability, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has revised the special hire rates for its electric buses, effective immediately. The revised rates are expected to unlock new revenue opportunities from sectors such as tourism, education, film production, and law enforcement.

Announcing the decision following a recent DTC Board meeting, Delhi Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Singh stated:

“This revision is a critical step toward transforming DTC into a financially self-sustaining and profitable entity within the next year. We are aligning our services with modern demand while ensuring fair cost recovery.”

🔹 Key Revisions:

  • Electric Low-Floor AC Buses:
    • Revised Hire Rate: ₹110 per kilometre
    • Minimum Daily Charge: ₹7,700 per bus (for up to 70 km)

A cost analysis for FY 2024–25 estimates the operational cost of an electric bus at ₹90.38 per kilometre, making the revised rates more aligned with actual expenses and helping bridge the gap between service delivery and financial recovery.

🔹 Comparison with Existing CNG Bus Rates:

  • Non-AC CNG Buses: ₹60/km (Minimum ₹3,000/day)
  • AC CNG Buses: ₹75/km (Minimum ₹4,500/day)

With CNG buses scheduled for gradual phase-out by the end of 2025, the shift to electric buses becomes crucial, both for environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
