Delhi Targets Faster Clearance of Ghazipur Landfill; Minister Ashish Sood Orders Bioremediation Capacity Hike to 12,000 MT by July 31

Date:

New Delhi, June 26: Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood on Friday said eliminating the city’s towering garbage dumps remains the government’s top priority and directed officials to significantly increase the daily bio-mining capacity at the Ghazipur landfill site.

Following an inspection of the Ghazipur landfill, Sood reviewed the ongoing scientific disposal of legacy waste and instructed officials to increase the daily bio-mining capacity from 7,000 metric tonnes to 12,000 metric tonnes by July 31.

The Minister also directed officials to ensure a separate processing mechanism for fresh municipal waste so that newly generated garbage does not add to the existing landfill.

In addition, he ordered weekly reviews of the progress of bio-remediation and waste processing works to ensure timely implementation.

“Making Delhi free from mountains of garbage is our government’s highest priority,” Sood said in a post on X after the inspection.

He said the government is committed to ensuring a permanent and scientific solution for all legacy landfill sites, including Ghazipur.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Government is working in mission mode to ensure a permanent and scientific solution for Ghazipur and all other legacy landfill sites,” the Minister said.

The Ghazipur landfill is one of Delhi’s oldest and largest legacy waste dumps and has remained a major environmental and public health concern for years.

The Minister’s directions were issued following his inspection of the site.
