Delhi| Rainy Nights, Troubled Mornings: The Bittersweet Impact of Midnight Storms

Date:

New Delhi: Last night, Delhi experienced several hours of torrential rain, resulting in widespread waterlogging across the city. Since this morning, residents have been grappling with flooded streets and significant traffic congestion. Fortunately, being a Sunday has somewhat alleviated the usual traffic volume. The challenges began shortly after midnight when heavy rainfall inundated numerous areas, creating not only ground-level disruptions but also affecting air travel, as two dozen flights were diverted due to adverse weather conditions.

Following an alert from the Meteorological Department, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were hit by a severe thunderstorm that caused extensive flooding in various neighborhoods. Many roads became impassable, leading to traffic jams in several locations, including Dhaula Kuan, Dwarka, Subroto Park, Nanakpura underpass, and Minto Road underpass.

The intensity of the storm was underscored by the fall of a century-old tree on Akbar Road. Additionally, areas such as Connaught Place, Moti Bagh, Dwarka, and Laxmi Nagar also experienced significant waterlogging following the downpour. As the city works to recover from this deluge, the impact of the storm is evident both on the ground and in the skies above.

The recent heavy rainfall has led to significant waterlogging on key roads in Delhi, particularly those connecting Dwarka and the airport, as well as Dhaula Kuan. Currently, these thoroughfares are submerged, resulting in severe traffic congestion throughout the city. The main artery affected is Dhaula Kuan, which serves as a vital link between Delhi and the airport. As a result of the flooding, vehicles are moving at a snail’s pace, creating long queues and frustrating delays for commuters.

Delhi Rain

Another critical junction in Delhi is ITO, which connects East Delhi, North Delhi, and Central Delhi, extending to South Delhi as well. Unfortunately, this area is also completely inundated. In Delhi Cantt, two vehicles—a car and a bus—have become trapped in water within an underpass, illustrating the unexpected dangers posed by the flooding. These vehicles were caught off guard, unaware of the extent of the water accumulation.

Turning our attention to Dwarka, a satellite town designed to accommodate the growing population of Delhi, we see that it too is grappling with drainage issues. After just a few hours of rain, substantial water accumulation is evident, with some vehicle tires partially submerged.

Subroto Park, located near Dhaula Kuan, is similarly affected. The road leading from Subroto Park to Dhaula Kuan is flooded, impacting traffic flow. This route is crucial for commuters traveling from North and West Delhi to Gurgaon and the airport. The current conditions highlight the urgent need for improved drainage infrastructure to prevent such disruptions in the future.

Nanakpura refers to the area adjacent to Dhaula Kuan, encompassing Subroto Park, Dhaula Kuan, and Nanakpura itself. This region has experienced significant water accumulation, primarily due to the nearby ring road, which contributes to heavy traffic congestion.

On Minto Road, a vehicle was recently damaged by the flooding, necessitating the use of a crane for its removal. The traffic situation has worsened as many vehicles remain stranded due to the water, causing further delays. Efforts are underway to clear these vehicles with cranes, but the congestion persists.

Minto Road serves as a vital artery connecting Connaught Place and New Delhi Railway Station, and it is frequently used by commuters traveling to the ITU. This road is crucial for Delhi’s transportation network, and it is not uncommon for water to accumulate beneath the Minto Road Bridge. Fortunately, traffic is gradually returning to normal. The heavy rainfall from yesterday has resulted in widespread waterlogging, affecting underpasses and roadways alike. The residents of Delhi are bearing the brunt of this situation, facing significant traffic jams.

The Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Delhi last night, followed by an orange alert for today. This early onset of the monsoon is expected to bring light rain over the next four to five days. While the heavy rainfall has made the weather in Delhi more pleasant and has lowered temperatures, it has also resulted in significant waterlogging, creating challenges for residents.
