New Delhi, June 25: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday inspected the ongoing restoration and rejuvenation works at Sanjay Lake in East Delhi and directed officials to expedite key infrastructure and ecological measures aimed at transforming the lake into a resilient, clean and year-round recreational destination.
During the visit, officials of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the phased action plan to revive the 52-acre Sanjay Lake and its adjoining 165-acre protected forest area.
Repair DJB Pipeline to Ensure Treated Water Supply
The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to expedite the repair of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) pipeline to ensure a continuous supply of treated water from the Dallupura Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), a key component of the lake restoration project.
He said uninterrupted treated water supply is essential for maintaining the lake’s ecological balance throughout the year.
Bio-Remediation and Modern Restoration Measures
According to officials, de-weeding, algae removal and strengthening of the lake embankments using geo-textile technology are already in progress.
The next phase of the project will include channelising stagnant water, installing bio-swales to improve groundwater recharge, undertaking bio-remediation, and installing aerators and fountains to enhance dissolved oxygen levels and improve water quality.
5,000 Native Trees to Boost Biodiversity
As part of the ecological restoration plan, the Delhi Development Authority will plant 5,000 native tree species to strengthen biodiversity around the lake and its surrounding forest ecosystem.
The initiative is aimed at creating a healthier habitat for birds, wildlife and local vegetation while improving the environmental quality of the area.
A Sustainable Blue-Green Public Space
Taranjit Singh Sandhu said the objective is to restore Sanjay Lake to its former glory and develop it into a clean, vibrant and environmentally sustainable public space for Delhi residents.
He said the restoration project would not only improve recreational facilities but also contribute significantly to strengthening Delhi’s environmental resilience, groundwater recharge and long-term ecological sustainability.
The rejuvenation of Sanjay Lake is part of the government’s broader efforts to conserve water bodies and expand green infrastructure across the national capital.
