Western Disturbance to Hit Delhi NCR from Jan 31 Night; Rain, Gusty Winds Likely

Date:

New Delhi: Weather conditions across Delhi NCR are set for another significant shift, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rainfall, strong winds, and intensified cold conditions over the coming days due to an active western disturbance.

According to the IMD, cloudy skies and moderate winds will prevail on Thursday and Friday, while rain is likely on February 1, accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. In view of this, the weather department has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and surrounding regions.

Western Disturbance to Trigger Rainfall

Meteorological officials said a western disturbance is expected to become active on the night of January 31, increasing the chances of rainfall across the National Capital Region. The system is likely to bring a wet cold spell, further lowering the “feels-like” temperature despite a marginal rise in minimum temperatures earlier in the week.

Recent Weather Shifts

The region witnessed a sudden change in weather on January 27, when heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and light hail were reported in parts of Ghaziabad, Noida, and nearby areas. The unsettled conditions have since contributed to dense fog during early morning and late-night hours, affecting visibility and transport movement.

Air Quality Remains a Concern

Despite intermittent rain and strong winds, air pollution levels remain critical, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing 300 in several parts of Delhi NCR, placing the region in the “poor to very poor” category.

Impact Across North India

Weather fluctuations are not limited to Delhi NCR alone.

  • Uttar Pradesh may witness rain, strong winds, and dense fog across at least 15 districts, prompting a Yellow Alert for fog.
  • Rajasthan is likely to receive rainfall between January 29 and 31, with isolated hailstorms possible.
  • Madhya Pradesh may also experience rainfall in multiple districts due to the same weather system.

Advisory for Residents

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during early mornings and late nights, as fog, rainfall, and strong winds may disrupt road and air traffic. Motorists have been urged to drive slowly, use fog lights, and avoid unnecessary travel during low-visibility hours.

With cold wave conditions persisting and another round of rain imminent, authorities recommend closely monitoring official weather updates over the next few days.
