Delhi Plans Microchipping and ABC Center Upgrades to Address Stray Dog Menace; Rabies Awareness Campaigns to be Launched

New Delhi: To address the increasing stray dog menace in the capital’s MCD areas, the second meeting of the Sub-Committee formed by the Standing Committee was convened on Monday. The meeting focused on upgrading Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers, launching anti-rabies awareness campaigns, and implementing a monitoring mechanism through dog microchipping.

The meeting was chaired by Sunder Singh, Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee and Sub-Committee Chairman. BJP MP and animal welfare activist Maneka Gandhi and Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma were also present, along with senior MCD officials and councillors.

Key decisions included strengthening ABC centers with improved medical facilities, trained veterinary staff, and expanded capacity for sterilizations. As part of a digitized tracking effort, MCD and partner NGOs will implant microchips in sterilized dogs. These chips will log sterilization and health status, enabling future identification and monitoring.

Maneka Gandhi stressed the urgent need for humane and efficient sterilization processes. “Sterilizations must be done compassionately with proper infrastructure and medical support,” she emphasized. Gandhi also called for a long-term strategy involving NGOs, MCD, and citizens to ensure a sensitive and sustainable solution.

Satya Sharma reiterated the Corporation’s commitment to public safety and animal welfare. “We aim to balance humane treatment of animals with the safety and well-being of citizens. We are moving swiftly and effectively in this direction,” she said.
