Over ₹13 Lakh Fines Imposed in Two Delhi Power Theft Cases; Tata Power-DDL Secures Convictions

Date:

New Delhi: In a stern crackdown on electricity theft, the Rohini electricity court has convicted two individuals in separate cases and imposed fines exceeding ₹13 lakh each, according to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL).

In the first case, a resident of Shalimar Bagh was found guilty of tampering with an electricity meter and unauthorised commercial use of power, including charging e-rickshaws. The enforcement team of the power utility, during a July 2018 inspection, detected a non-domestic load of 18.045 KW being used without proper authorisation.

Following legal proceedings, the Rohini electricity court imposed a civil liability of ₹13.56 lakh, convicting the accused under Sections 135 and 138 of the Electricity Act, 2003.

In the second case, the same court sentenced a resident of Mangolpuri to three months in jail for the direct theft of electricity through illegal tapping. The incident dates back to February 2017, when the individual was found using power without authorisation for domestic needs and e-rickshaw charging.

“The accused had attempted to hide the theft by operating under a meter registered in a family member’s name,” the Tata Power-DDL spokesperson said. The court imposed a civil penalty of ₹13.78 lakh and ordered the accused into immediate custody.

With these rulings, Tata Power-DDL has secured seven convictions in 2025 alone, with more electricity theft cases currently under trial.

“These convictions underscore our zero-tolerance approach towards power theft and our commitment to legal enforcement,” said a company official.
