Delhi Offers to Take Over Munak Canal Maintenance, CM Rekha Gupta to Discuss Proposal with Haryana CM Nayab Saini

Date:

New Delhi: In a proactive move to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that the city government is willing to take over the maintenance of the Munak Canal. The canal, which originates in Haryana and supplies water to nearly 20 lakh residents in Delhi, has suffered from poor upkeep and pollution, according to the CM.

Speaking after a review meeting with officials from Haryana, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department and other stakeholders, Gupta said she will soon raise the proposal with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Calling Munak Canal the “lifeline of Delhi,” CM Gupta cited damaged canal linings, unpaved sections, and lack of security as pressing concerns. “Several stretches of the canal within Delhi are poorly maintained, increasing the risk of contamination. If Haryana is facing challenges in upkeep, we are ready to take full responsibility,” she said.

The Delhi government is also keen to improve the canal’s surroundings to facilitate the smooth conduct of religious and cultural events along its banks.

Officials said the canal enters Delhi at Bawana and extends up to Inderlok, covering approximately 20 kilometers. Although the land and maintenance responsibilities currently fall under the Haryana Irrigation Department, Gupta stated that Delhi has the budgetary capacity and administrative will to handle its upkeep effectively.

The Haryana officials present at the meeting reportedly did not raise any objections to the offer, signaling a potential breakthrough in inter-state collaboration.

The Munak Canal feeds into the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant, which processes nearly 200 MGD (million gallons per day) of water, making it a vital infrastructure asset for Delhi’s water supply.
