New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government, alleging widespread — misgovernance — marked by a series of detrimental policies impacting the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
The AAP specifically cited escalating school fees, controversial slum demolitions, increased electricity charges, and persistent power outages as evidence of the BJP’s failure to govern effectively. While the Delhi government and the BJP have yet to respond directly to the accusations, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj asserted that the BJP has “failed” all segments of Delhi society within its first four months in power.
He highlighted a pattern of actions that, according to the AAP, are actively making life more difficult for residents. “The BJP seems determined to make life difficult for every citizen,” Bharadwaj stated.
“First came private school fee hikes, then bulldozers over jhuggis, and now a 10.5 percent PPAC hike in electricity bills amidst a scorching summer,” Bharadwaj further pointed out what he perceived as hypocrisy, referencing the BJP’s previous criticism of an 8 percent Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC) hike under the previous Delhi government in 2024.
He questioned the BJP’s moral standing, stating, “If an 8 percent hike made [former Chief Minister] Kejriwal a thief, what does a 10.5 percent hike under the BJP make them? Will they now call themselves ‘mahachors’?” (a Hindi term for “grand thieves”). The AAP leader also criticized the BJP for its unfulfilled promise to eliminate pension charges from electricity bills, a pledge made prior to assuming power.
“The BJP leaders had publicly declared pension charges unjust. Four months into their government, why are those 8 percent charges still burdening people?” he demanded. Adding to the list of grievances, Bharadwaj claimed that Delhi is experiencing a resurgence of power outages, forcing residents to rely on inverters.
“In Chhatarpur, power was cut from 8 pm to 10 am – a 14-hour blackout. In areas like Greater Kailash, the residents who didn’t need inverters for 10 years are now buying them just to run a fan. This is the reality under the BJP,” he concluded. The AAP’s strong accusations set the stage for a potentially heated political battle in Delhi.
