NEW DELHI: Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma of the Delhi government has been making significant strides in his efforts to revitalize various areas of the city. During a recent visit, he announced his government’s ambitious plan to restore the forgotten Sahibi River in Delhi.
Verma revealed that the Flood Control Department, which falls under his ministry, has been mobilized to oversee the restoration project. Three executive engineers have been deployed to the river, formerly known as the Sahibi River, which originates from the Aravalli Hills and flows into the Yamuna River. Over the years, the river has lost its identity due to urbanization, industrialization, and the rapid growth of Delhi’s population. Verma emphasized the importance of gradually rehabilitating the river to improve its overall health.
The three executive engineers will be stationed near the river and will travel by boat to each other’s offices to assess the river’s conditions firsthand. This hands-on approach will provide them with a deeper understanding of the scale of work required to restore the river. By immersing themselves in the river’s environment, including its distinct smell, the engineers will be motivated to work diligently towards its restoration.

Verma also commended the BJP MLAs for their dedication to the project, noting that they have taken on the role of Chief Engineers after attending numerous review meetings over the past month. He praised their hard work and attention to detail, likening their commitment to that of professional engineers. The MLAs have been actively involved in discussions about sewer systems, road construction, interceptor placement, and other crucial aspects of the restoration project.
The Minister emphasized that regardless of which government is in power, he will refrain from criticizing them as the people have entrusted them with their responsibilities. Engaging in pointless discussions serves no purpose; instead, our focus should be on enhancing the beauty of Delhi, a goal we are committed to achieving. The Indian government has assured us that there are no financial constraints, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraging us to utilize as much funding as necessary. With the combined efforts of this “double engine government,” we have the resources to fulfill our objectives.
However, it is essential to exercise prudence in financial matters. Every rupee spent will be meticulously monitored to ensure accountability. We will not tolerate substandard work, such as roads that deteriorate within a short period. Contractors must adhere to high standards, as any defects will result in financial penalties. Our priority is to revamp all roads in Delhi, including drainage systems and sidewalks, to enhance the overall aesthetics of the city. While plans are still in the developmental phase, significant progress has been made, thanks to the ample budget at our disposal.
All projects assigned by our corporation councilors and legislators will be executed promptly, leaving no task unfinished. Our commitment is unwavering, and we are dedicated to transforming Delhi into a more visually appealing and functional city.
