Old Delhi Administration Issues Eviction Notice to Yamuna Floodplain Encroachments Under Disaster Management Act

Date:

New Delhi: The Office of the CEO (DDMA) and Additional District Magistrate, Old Delhi, has issued an eviction notice to residents allegedly occupying illegal settlements along the Yamuna floodplain near Yamuna Bazar, citing serious flood and disaster risks.

The notice, issued under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, states that nearly 310 dwellings have been constructed as encroachments within the wall along the Yamuna riverbanks in the O-Zone floodplain area owned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

According to the administration, the area gets inundated during annual Yamuna floods, posing a significant threat to human life, livestock and property.

The notice further states that repeated flooding in the area has forced emergency response operations, including temporary relocation and rehabilitation efforts by the Revenue Department, leading to strain on public resources and government expenditure.

Authorities have termed the continued occupation of the floodplain a “potential disaster risk” requiring immediate preventive and mitigation measures.

Residents occupying the area have been directed to vacate the premises immediately, and in any case within 15 days from the issuance of the notice dated May 5, 2026.

The administration has also instructed occupants to voluntarily remove their belongings and unauthorized structures within the stipulated period.

The order warns that failure to comply could result in demolition and forced eviction action by concerned authorities without further notice.

Officials clarified that the notice has been issued in the interest of public safety and disaster risk reduction and would not prevent authorities from initiating additional legal action under applicable laws.
