New Delhi: Severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue across Delhi-NCR and several parts of North and Central India, with temperatures likely to remain around or above 45°C over the next seven days, weather experts have warned.
Speaking about the worsening heat conditions, weather scientist Akhil Srivastava said maximum temperatures across North-West India and parts of Central India are steadily rising, pushing many regions into severe heatwave conditions.
According to him, several places have already crossed the 45°C mark, and there is unlikely to be any major relief in the plains during the coming week.
Delhi-NCR May Cross 45°C
Srivastava said temperatures in Delhi-NCR are expected to remain around 45°C and may even slightly cross that mark on certain days.
He noted that:
- Heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next seven days
- Temperature impact between 45°C and 46°C remains similarly severe
- Residents should prepare for prolonged extreme heat conditions
Orange Alert Issued in Multiple States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued:
- Orange Alert for Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha
- Yellow Alert for Rajasthan and Marathwada
- Heatwave warnings for Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh as well
The weather scientist said several regions are witnessing dangerously high daytime temperatures along with rising night temperatures.
Warm Night Conditions Increase Risk
Apart from daytime heat, “warm night conditions” are also being reported in parts of:
- Southern Uttar Pradesh
- Madhya Pradesh
Night temperatures in these areas are remaining above normal, increasing health risks and heat stress levels.
Limited Impact of Western Disturbance
Although a western disturbance is active, Srivastava said its impact is currently limited mainly to hilly regions and higher reaches.
Some heat-related warnings have also been issued for:
- Jammu region
- Southern parts of Himachal Pradesh
- Southern Uttarakhand
However, plains including Delhi are unlikely to receive meaningful relief from this system.
IMD Advisory for Public Safety
The weather department has advised people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Key safety measures include:
- Staying hydrated and drinking water regularly
- Avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours
- Using umbrellas, caps or protective coverings outdoors
- Taking frequent breaks in shaded or cool places
Officials said even people not feeling thirsty should continue consuming fluids regularly to avoid dehydration.
According to current forecasts, Delhi and surrounding regions are unlikely to see significant relief from extreme heat for at least another week.
