New Delhi: Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has approved the Delhi government’s proposal to dissolve the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) over alleged irregularities, officials said on Tuesday.
Saxena has also directed the Health Department to initiate the reconstitution of the DMC and complete the process within two months.
The Delhi Medical Council is a statutory autonomous body tasked with regulating medical practice and ensuring ethical standards among practitioners in the national capital.
According to officials, the Health Department had invoked Section 29 of the Delhi Medical Council Act, 1997, recommending the council’s dissolution for a defined period.
In a note addressed to the department, the LG pointed out that the DMC had extended the retirement age of its Registrar from 60 to 65 years without seeking government approval, and further extended the official’s tenure by an additional year from December 1, 2024.
Responding to a showcause notice issued earlier this year, the DMC claimed that the Registrar had resigned with immediate effect but failed to furnish any supporting details, the LG noted.
Saxena said the council had “exceeded” and “abused” its powers under the law and concurred with the Health Department’s recommendation to dissolve it.
The LG also directed that two ex-officio members of the DMC should continue in their roles and that the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) should assume the responsibilities of the Registrar during the interim period.
