Delhi Metro Fare Hike from August 25: Passengers to Pay ₹1–₹5 More Per Journey

Date:

New Delhi: Commuters in the national capital will now have to pay higher Delhi Metro fares as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has implemented a fresh fare revision effective Monday, August 25, 2025.

Under the revised fare structure, passengers will pay ₹1 to ₹4 more depending on the distance travelled, while the Airport Express Line will see an increase of up to ₹5 per journey.

New Fare Slabs

According to DMRC, the base fare for 0–2 km has been increased from ₹10 to ₹11, while travelling beyond 32 km will now cost ₹64 instead of ₹60. Similarly, on Sundays and national holidays, short-distance fares such as 2–5 km will now be ₹11 instead of ₹10.

Despite the hike, DMRC has clarified that passengers using smart cards and digital payments will continue to receive concessional benefits.

Reason for the Hike

DMRC officials explained that the fare hike was necessary to meet the rising operational and maintenance costs, as well as to fund service improvements. However, the decision has sparked criticism from daily commuters who argue that the middle class will face an increased financial burden.

Commuter Reactions

Passengers expressed concerns over the timing of the increase, citing overcrowding, limited facilities, and peak-hour rush as continuing problems. “Instead of raising fares, DMRC should focus on improving services. Metro is convenient but overcrowding and long queues waste time,” said one office-goer.

While the fare hike aims to keep Delhi Metro financially sustainable, many fear it could discourage daily ridership and strain household budgets already under pressure.
