Mob beats traffic cop on Tamarpur/Wazirabad flyover; four arrested after video goes viral

Date:

New Delhi: A disturbing video that has been widely shared on social media shows a group of youths assaulting a traffic police constable on a city flyover, sparking public outrage and calls for swift police action.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the incident took place on September 24 near the Tamarpur / Wazirabad flyover. A traffic constable — identified in local reports as Surajpal — had stopped two young men riding a scooter without helmets. When the officer began issuing a challan, a confrontation escalated: several other youths arrived, the argument turned violent and the officer was punched, shoved and repeatedly hit as bystanders recorded the attack on their phones.

The clip, which circulated rapidly online, shows multiple assailants grabbing the constable by the collar, striking him and dragging him into the middle of the carriageway while traffic flowed around them. CCTV footage from the area is reported to corroborate the mobile-phone video.

Tamarpur police said an FIR has been registered in connection with the assault. Four suspects have been arrested so far; investigations and reconnaissance based on the CCTV and mobile footage are ongoing as officers try to identify additional perpetrators. Police have stepped up patrols in the area and appealed to anyone with further information or footage to come forward.

Social media reaction has been swift and condemnatory. Users demanded stricter protection for traffic personnel and immediate, stern action against the attackers. “If those who attack uniformed men go unpunished, what chance do ordinary citizens have?” wrote one user. Another urged senior Delhi Police officials to fast-track identification and prosecution of all those seen in the clip.

The assault has reopened debate around safety of law-enforcement staff deployed on traffic duty and the risks they face while performing routine checks. Senior police sources said the probe will look into whether alcohol or other factors contributed to the violence, and whether those involved have prior criminal records.

Delhi Police reiterated that attacks on on-duty officers will be treated seriously and that the force is committed to ensuring safety for its personnel and maintaining law and order. Further arrests and updates are expected as the investigation continues.
