New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, the Delhi Police have arrested a 22-year-old accountant and his associate for allegedly staging a fake robbery involving ₹13 lakh in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar area to cover up personal gambling losses, officials confirmed on Friday.
The key accused, Subhash Chand, employed at a local trading firm, allegedly plotted the crime to recover from a ₹30 lakh gambling debt. According to police, Subhash conspired with his friend, Vijaypal (26), a native of Mahendergarh, Haryana, to fake the heist.
The incident came to light on Thursday when Subhash reported to the police that he had been attacked by six unidentified men riding three motorcycles who robbed him at knifepoint on a flyover shortly after he withdrew ₹13 lakh from a bank.

However, during investigation, CCTV footage from nearby locations showed no sign of any suspicious vehicles or individuals tailing Subhash. Additionally, his injuries were superficial and inconsistent with a knife assault.
“Upon detailed questioning, Subhash confessed to fabricating the robbery. He revealed that he handed over the cash to Vijaypal at Rajouri Garden Metro Station, and then called the police with a false report,” an officer said.
Further probe revealed that Vijaypal fled the city using a bike taxi and later boarded a bus to Haryana. A police team was promptly dispatched to Mahendergarh, where the entire stolen sum was recovered from Vijaypal’s residence.
Both Subhash and Vijaypal have been arrested and face charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and misleading the police. A detailed investigation is currently underway.
