Delhi Government Gives Coaching Centres One Month to Meet Fire Safety Norms; Non-Compliant Institutes Face Sealing: CM Rekha Gupta

Date:

New Delhi, June 27: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has issued a one-month deadline for coaching institutes across the national capital to fully comply with mandatory fire safety norms, warning that institutions failing to do so will face strict action, including sealing.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said the number of coaching centres operating in Delhi was not the government’s concern, but ensuring the safety and security of students was.

“One month. That is the deadline. The number of coaching institutes in Delhi is not the issue. The safety and security of our children is,” Gupta said.

She warned that any coaching institute operating without a fire audit, mandatory safety equipment or prescribed safety measures would face stringent action if deficiencies are not rectified within the stipulated period.

The Chief Minister also appealed to students to actively report unsafe coaching institutes through messages, emails or phone calls, assuring that every complaint would be acted upon.

“No compromise with the safety of our children,” she said.

Safety Checklist Issued for Coaching Centres

Along with her message, the Chief Minister shared a safety advisory highlighting the essential equipment and systems every coaching institute should have to ensure emergency preparedness.

The advisory lists the following mandatory safety measures:

  • Fire Extinguisher – To control small fires before they spread.
  • Smoke Detector – To detect smoke early and trigger timely alerts.
  • Fire Alarm System – To warn occupants and facilitate immediate evacuation.
  • Emergency Exit Signage – To clearly guide students and staff towards safe exits.
  • Emergency Lights – To provide illumination during power failures and emergencies.
  • First Aid Kit – For immediate medical assistance during accidents.
  • CCTV Cameras – To enhance security monitoring inside and outside the premises.
  • Public Address System/Speakers – For emergency announcements and evacuation instructions.
  • Fire Exit Door – To provide a safe evacuation route during emergencies.
  • Evacuation Plan Display – To help occupants understand designated escape routes.
  • Sand Bucket/Fire Bucket – To assist in controlling small fires during the initial stage.
  • Electrical Safety Equipment (MCB/ELCB) – To prevent electrical short circuits and electric shocks.
  • Emergency Contact Board – Displaying important emergency telephone numbers.
  • Emergency Water Supply – To support firefighting efforts during emergencies.
  • Emergency Assembly Point – A designated safe location where students and staff can gather after evacuation.

The advisory carries the message “Safe Centre • Safe Students • Safe Future”, underscoring the government’s emphasis on strengthening safety standards at coaching institutions.

The move comes amid increased focus on safety compliance at educational institutions following recent fire and infrastructure-related incidents.

The Delhi Government has said enforcement agencies will monitor compliance, and institutes that fail to meet prescribed safety standards within the one-month deadline may face sealing and other legal action.
