New Delhi, June 8: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu chaired a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) along with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Cabinet Ministers Ashish Sood and Parvesh Sahib Singh, where a comprehensive review of action against illegal buildings, fire safety violations, disaster preparedness and monsoon readiness was undertaken.
The meeting reviewed ongoing enforcement operations against unauthorized constructions and instances of misuse of licenses related to fire safety norms. Officials also discussed measures to strengthen preparedness and response mechanisms ahead of the monsoon season.
The Lieutenant Governor said that while Delhi faces significant disaster-related vulnerabilities, these challenges also provide an opportunity to improve preparedness, build resilience and strengthen emergency response systems. He emphasized that enforcement measures should be carried out firmly but must not result in harassment of ordinary residents.
To address manpower shortages in the Delhi Fire Services, Sandhu suggested exploring the engagement of former Agniveers to fill existing vacancies and strengthen emergency response capabilities.
The LG also directed the special teams of officers constituted last week to submit their Action Taken Reports (ATRs) within the stipulated timeframe to ensure effective monitoring of enforcement measures.
Apart from enforcement and fire safety issues, the DDMA reviewed heatwave management measures and the status of monsoon preparedness across the capital. The Lieutenant Governor called for extra caution and strict implementation of preventive measures, stressing a zero-tolerance approach towards flooding during the upcoming rainy season.
The meeting comes amid intensified inspections of commercial establishments, illegal constructions and fire safety compliance following recent incidents in the national capital, with authorities focusing on strengthening disaster resilience and public safety infrastructure.
