Delhi Launches Month-Long Fire Safety Crackdown After Malviya Nagar Fire Tragedy

Date:

New Delhi, June 3: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has announced a month-long citywide fire safety enforcement drive following the deadly Malviya Nagar fire incident.

Chairing an emergency high-level review meeting along with Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, the LG said a comprehensive multi-departmental action plan has been prepared under the Home Department, Government of NCT of Delhi, to strengthen fire safety compliance across the capital.

Beginning June 4, district administrations, Delhi Police and MCD officials will jointly conduct intensive inspections and audits of hotels, guest houses, nursing homes, coaching centres and other vulnerable establishments.

The drive will be led by District Magistrates (DMs), Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and MCD Deputy Commissioners. Authorities have been directed to identify violations, conduct fire safety audits and seal establishments found operating without compliance.

According to the LG, the enforcement campaign will be jointly monitored by the Delhi Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Police to ensure strict accountability and zero tolerance towards negligence.

In addition to the enforcement exercise, a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the Malviya Nagar fire incident to establish facts and fix responsibility.

The Delhi Government said the objective of the month-long campaign is to strengthen fire safety preparedness, improve compliance standards and prevent similar tragedies across the national capital.
