Delhi Govt on Flood Alert: CM Rekha Gupta, LG Taranjeet Singh Inspect Yamuna Ghats

Date:

New Delhi: With a focus on preventing flood-like situations in the national capital, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor Taranjeet Singh conducted a joint inspection of key Yamuna ghats and flood-prone areas.

The inspection covered locations including Vasudev Ghat, which was recently renovated during the Chhath festival. Officials emphasized that continuous maintenance and development of such ghats will help avoid last-minute expenditure of crores during festive seasons.

Authorities have also taken action against encroachments in floodplain areas, clearing illegally occupied spaces to minimize risks during heavy rains and rising water levels. Officials noted that such encroachments often worsen flood situations and lead to significant damage.

Flood Preparedness Plan:
The Delhi government is working in “action mode” to strengthen flood control measures. Earlier, a high-level review meeting had decided to adopt a Japan-inspired model for flood management. This includes the construction of pits and nearly 18 diversion channels to prevent water accumulation and reduce flood risk.

Administration’s Joint Approach:
Speaking during the inspection, LG Taranjeet Singh highlighted that the entire Delhi administration is working in coordination. He stated that seasonal challenges such as summer water scarcity and monsoon flooding are being addressed through planned interventions and best practices.

He added that regular inspections will continue, with both the Chief Minister and administrative teams monitoring progress closely. “We may not see revolutionary changes overnight, but steady and incremental improvements will continue,” he said.

Officials stressed that Delhi, being the national capital, requires sustained focus on infrastructure, cleanliness, and disaster preparedness to ensure safety for residents and future generations.

The inspection is part of a broader effort to tackle long-standing civic and environmental challenges in the city while ensuring continuous development.
