Yamuna River Crosses Warning Mark in Delhi, Water Release from Hathnikund Barrage Triggers Flood Alert

Date:

New Delhi, Aug 17: The Yamuna river in Delhi breached the warning level on Sunday, touching 204.60 metres at 7 pm at the Old Railway Bridge, officials confirmed. The warning mark stands at 204.50 metres, while the danger mark is 205.33 metres; evacuation measures are triggered if levels reach 206 metres.

The Old Railway Bridge serves as a key monitoring point for Delhi’s flood preparedness. Authorities have directed all agencies to remain on alert as water levels are expected to rise further in the next 48 hours.

Heavy Barrage Discharges Push Levels Up

Officials at the central flood room attributed the surge to large-scale water releases from the Hathnikund and Wazirabad barrages.

  • Hathnikund barrage is discharging 127,030 cusecs, the highest this season.
  • Wazirabad is releasing 45,620 cusecs per hour.

“Water takes around 48–50 hours to reach Delhi from the upstream barrages, so the river level will continue to rise,” an official said. Even smaller discharges from Haryana have been pushing the Yamuna close to its danger mark in the Capital.

Rising Trend Since Friday

The Yamuna has been steadily swelling over the past three days:

  • Friday (1 pm): 204.65 metres
  • Saturday: 205.11 metres
  • Sunday (7 pm): 204.60 metres
