PWD Minister Parvesh Verma Inspects Waterlogging Hotspots, Declares Minto Bridge Clear Amid Heavy Rains

Date:

New Delhi: As heavy monsoon showers swept across the capital on Wednesday, Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma conducted an on-ground inspection of key waterlogging-prone areas, including the notorious Minto Bridge underpass in central Delhi.

Speaking to the media from the Minto Bridge site, Verma confirmed there was no water accumulation this year — a significant improvement compared to previous monsoons. “We’ve implemented proactive measures to prevent waterlogging at this critical location. Earlier, images of submerged buses were routine during the rains, but today, all pump operators are on high alert and actively engaged in de-watering operations,” the minister said.

Verma, who also represents the New Delhi Assembly constituency, extended his inspection to Connaught Place and surrounding areas. He stated that the Delhi government has been consistently addressing waterlogging issues across identified hotspots over the past four months. “Some sites have already been fixed, and work is ongoing at others. This clearly reflects the government’s honest efforts to resolve long-standing civic challenges,” he added.

The Minto Bridge underpass, which connects Connaught Place to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, has long been one of Delhi’s top 10 waterlogging blackspots during the monsoon. It remains under close watch by the PWD.

Separately, the department is also undertaking urgent repair and cleaning of a large underground stormwater sump tank located near Gate No. 6 of Bharat Mandapam, another critical flood-prone zone. Officials stated that work on the sump, which was installed two years ago, will be completed within the next few days to ensure uninterrupted rainwater drainage.

The Delhi government has reiterated its commitment to citywide preparedness ahead of peak monsoon season, with multiple agencies working in coordination to reduce flooding across major junctions.
