Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Urges CAQM to Reconsider Fuel Ban on Overage Vehicles, Cites Public Hardship

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has written to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), urging it to reconsider its directive banning fuel for end-of-life (EOL) vehicles in the city, citing the adverse impact on lakhs of residents’ daily lives and livelihoods.

In a strongly worded appeal, the chief minister emphasised that while her government is fully committed to tackling air pollution and promoting clean and sustainable transport, it is equally important to ensure that environmental measures do not overlook the social and economic needs of citizens.

“The current ban is causing immense hardship to common people, especially families dependent on older vehicles for their livelihood. A balanced approach that protects both the environment and public welfare is the need of the hour,” Gupta stated in her letter.

The appeal was sent through Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who urged the commission to immediately suspend the enforcement of the order and engage with stakeholders to formulate a more practical, phased, and equitable solution.

Highlighting the importance of public consultation, the Delhi government reiterated that its policies are rooted in citizen welfare and committed to ensuring sustainable reforms without disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations.

“The Delhi government stands firmly with its people and remains resolute in its mission to safeguard public convenience while pursuing cleaner air for all,” said Chief Minister Gupta.
