New Delhi: The political confrontation over the alleged insult of Sikh Gurus has intensified, with the Delhi Legislative Assembly issuing formal notices to senior Punjab Police officials in connection with an FIR registered against Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra.
The Assembly has sought explanations from the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), Special DGP, Cyber Cell officials, and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner, questioning why legal action was initiated while the matter remains pending before the Delhi Assembly’s Privileges Committee.

Taking a strong stand in the House, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta asserted that the video clip in question is the property of the Assembly, as it was recorded during official proceedings.
“The recording was made inside the House. Cognisance of this matter will be taken only by the Assembly,” the Speaker said.

Addressing allegations that the video was “tampered,” the Speaker termed such claims an attack on the dignity of the House, stating that the recording had been sent for forensic examination only to satisfy the Opposition’s demand, not due to any procedural lapse.
“Calling the House recording tampered is a serious breach of privilege,” he warned, adding that strict action would be taken against all those involved in what he described as a conspiracy.

The Assembly has also initiated proceedings for breach of privilege against the Jalandhar Police Commissioner, stating that jurisdictional overreach cannot be ignored when the matter is sub judice before the Legislature.

Punjab Government’s Response
Reacting to the Assembly’s move, Punjab Minister Aman Arora defended the FIR, stating that the case was registered based on the findings of a forensic laboratory report.
He alleged that the BJP had distorted and misused religious imagery, causing offence to Sikh sentiments.
“When Guru Sahiban are disrespected, it directly hurts the sentiments of the people of Punjab. It is the duty of the Punjab Government and Punjab Police to take corrective action,” Arora said, adding that the forensic examination was conducted in Punjab, unlike the Delhi Assembly which, according to him, had not independently examined the content before making allegations.
BJP Raises Counter Allegations
Meanwhile, the controversy has widened further, with the BJP in Punjab accusing the AAP government of disrespecting the Guru Granth Sahib in publicity material linked to its anti-drug campaign.
BJP leaders have objected to the use of sacred Sikh imagery in political posters, calling it an act of “religious insensitivity.”
With both sides escalating their positions, the issue has now evolved into a full-blown political and constitutional confrontation between Delhi and Punjab, blending questions of religious sentiment, legislative privilege, and police jurisdiction.
Further developments are awaited as the Privileges Committee continues its examination and Punjab Police responds to the Assembly’s notice.
