New Delhi, June 29: In a major push towards cleaner transportation and reducing vehicular pollution, the Delhi Government has approved the Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026, which will come into effect on July 1, 2026, and remain operational until March 31, 2030.
Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said the policy is designed to accelerate Delhi’s transition to clean, sustainable mobility while making electric vehicles more affordable for consumers through tax exemptions, purchase incentives and expanded charging infrastructure.
Electric Cars Up to ₹30 Lakh to Get Full Tax Exemption
One of the biggest incentives under the new policy is a 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh.
The government said the measure is expected to encourage faster adoption of electric passenger vehicles among middle-class buyers while reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered cars.
Purchase Incentives for EV Buyers
The policy also provides direct financial incentives for buyers across multiple EV categories.
Eligible beneficiaries can receive:
- Up to ₹30,000 for purchasing an electric two-wheeler.
- Up to ₹50,000 for purchasing an electric three-wheeler.
- Up to ₹1 lakh for purchasing an electric N1 category goods vehicle.
All eligible incentives will be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
Incentives to Scrap Old Polluting Vehicles
To accelerate the replacement of older vehicles, the Delhi Government has also introduced scrapping incentives ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹1 lakh for owners replacing polluting vehicles with electric alternatives.
The initiative aims to remove ageing, high-emission vehicles from Delhi’s roads while promoting cleaner mobility.
30,000 EV Charging Points Planned
Recognising charging infrastructure as a key requirement for large-scale EV adoption, the government plans to establish more than 30,000 electric vehicle charging points across the national capital during the policy period.
The expanded charging network is expected to improve accessibility and reduce range anxiety among EV users.
Mandatory Electrification in Phases
The policy also introduces a phased transition towards electric commercial and personal mobility.
Beginning January 1, 2027, only new electric auto-rickshaws and N1 category electric goods carriers will be eligible for registration in Delhi.
From April 1, 2028, the registration of new petrol and diesel two-wheelers will effectively be phased out, with only new electric two-wheelers being registered thereafter.
Government Targets Cleaner Air
According to the Delhi Government, the EV Policy 2026 is aimed at reducing vehicular emissions, improving air quality and building a future-ready transport ecosystem.
The policy is expected to support Delhi’s long-term environmental objectives while encouraging greater adoption of electric mobility through financial incentives, infrastructure development and regulatory reforms.
Government Statement
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office said:
“The Delhi Cabinet has approved the new Delhi EV Policy 2026, a landmark initiative to curb vehicular pollution and accelerate the transition towards clean, sustainable mobility in the national capital.”
It added that the policy reflects the government’s commitment to cleaner air, greener mobility and a future-ready Delhi, while making sustainable transportation more accessible to citizens.
