New Delhi: A 26-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly impersonating another woman and engaging in cyberstalking by creating a fake social media account using the victim’s photographs, police reported on Wednesday.
The accused, a resident of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, reportedly acted out of suspicion regarding her husband’s past acquaintance with the complainant.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia, the suspect appropriated images from the victim’s social media profile to establish a fraudulent account in her name.
The complainant, a 30-year-old woman from Delhi, approached the cyber police in North Delhi after discovering that an unknown individual had created a fake social media profile impersonating her. This account was allegedly used to contact her friends and colleagues, prompting her to seek assistance from law enforcement.
Following the filing of her complaint, an FIR was registered, and a thorough investigation was initiated. Police conducted a technical analysis that revealed details about the fraudulent account.
“Surveillance indicated that the SIM card associated with the fake account was registered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Further analysis allowed us to trace the current location of the accused to Nangloi in Delhi,” stated the DCP.
A police team executed a search operation and apprehended the suspect in Nangloi, recovering a mobile phone and SIM card used in the commission of the offense.
During interrogation, the accused admitted that her suspicions were aroused after her husband, whom she married in 2023, shared a photo with friends that included the complainant. Additionally, her husband followed the complainant on social media, leading her to believe he might have an interest in her.
To validate her suspicions, the accused allegedly sent inappropriate messages to the complainant from her husband’s account, which ultimately resulted in the complainant blocking him, according to police reports.
