Delhi Rains: Red Alert Issued as Heavy Showers Cause Waterlogging, Traffic Chaos Across NCR

New Delhi: The national capital woke up to heavy rainfall on Saturday, causing severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across multiple parts of Delhi-NCR. Areas including Shastri Bhavan, Aripuram, Motibagh, and Kidwai Nagar witnessed intense downpours since Friday evening, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Delhi and a yellow alert for Gautam Buddh Nagar, warning of thunderstorms and lightning.

According to IMD forecasts, similar conditions are expected to continue on August 13 and 14, affecting Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, with more rain likely in the evening hours.

In Delhi, Safdarjung recorded 58 mm of rainfall till early morning, while Lodi Road reported 57 mm by 6:45 am. Heavy cloud cover is predicted to bring more showers throughout the day.

The downpour has led to massive traffic jams on key roads, including Ring Road, Pachkuian Road, and stretches connecting Anand Vihar to Central Delhi. Reports of congestion also came from Connaught Place and other central areas. With Saturday being a busy day in the capital, the Delhi Traffic Police is expected to issue advisories to manage vehicular movement.

Authorities are also monitoring the potential impact on rail and air traffic, though no major disruptions have been confirmed yet. The IMD warns of moderate to heavy rainfall continuing in parts of the city, urging commuters to plan their travel accordingly.
