New Delhi: With heightened security measures in place ahead of the January 26 Republic Day celebrations, Delhi Police has introduced a new AI-enabled surveillance tool—smart glasses equipped with facial recognition technology—to swiftly identify criminals and terror suspects in public spaces.
The AI glasses, which will be deployed at Republic Day समारोह (RDC) venues and other high-security zones, are integrated with a Facial Recognition System (FRS) linked to police databases. According to police officials, the system can flag a suspect within two minutes of visual contact.
Explaining the technology, Sub-Inspector Komal demonstrated how the glasses work. The device is connected to a mobile database containing facial data of approximately 65,000 to 70,000 criminals, including wanted offenders and terror suspects. When a person appears within the camera’s range, the system scans the face in real time.
A green square indicates no criminal record, while a red square alert signals that the individual matches a record in the database. Once flagged, the suspect can be discreetly isolated, detained, or questioned by police personnel without creating panic among the public.
The AI glasses are fitted with a front-mounted camera that continuously captures facial data in crowded areas. Officials said the technology will significantly enhance preventive policing, especially during large public gatherings.
Delhi Police confirmed that a sufficient number of personnel across multiple zones have been equipped with these AI glasses and will be stationed at sensitive locations during Republic Day celebrations. The move marks a major step towards technology-driven policing and proactive threat detection.
Police officials emphasized that the system is meant to strengthen security preparedness and ensure public safety, as the national capital remains on high alert for potential security threats during Republic Day events.
