New Delhi, July 9: Three people were killed and one labourer sustained injuries after a newly constructed ground-plus-four-storey building collapsed in Rohini Sector 16 on Tuesday evening. Delhi Police has registered an FIR in connection with the incident, while rescue operations, debris removal and investigation into the cause of the collapse are continuing.
According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS), four people were trapped beneath the debris when the building collapsed. Rescue teams managed to pull all four occupants out and shifted them to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hospital.
Doctors declared Noorul Huda (20), Ram Dua (51) and Ram (42) dead. The fourth victim, Saddam (34), sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Rescue operations were jointly carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Revenue Department of the Delhi Government.
MCD’s Preliminary Findings
In its preliminary inspection report, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said the collapse involved properties bearing Nos. G-4/152 and G-4/153 in Rohini Sector 16.
According to the civic body, both buildings had been recently constructed after obtaining building plan approvals under the SARAL Scheme. The sanctioned plans were issued on March 21, 2025 and April 10, 2025, with each property constructed on plots measuring approximately 26 square metres.
During the inspection, MCD officials gathered information from local residents and persons present at the site, who stated that plumbing work was being carried out inside the buildings before the collapse.
The report noted that drilling or cutting of structural members such as columns and beams may have been undertaken as part of the plumbing work, although this aspect remains under investigation.
Structural Failure Suspected
MCD stated that based on preliminary observations, the collapse may have resulted from structural failure and/or differential settlement of the foundation. However, officials clarified that the exact cause cannot be conclusively determined at this stage and will be established only after a detailed technical investigation.
The civic body also noted that overall supervision of the construction was the responsibility of the architect and structural engineer associated with the approved building plans.
FIR Registered
Delhi Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident. Investigators are examining all aspects of the case, including construction quality, structural stability, compliance with approved plans and the circumstances under which the collapse occurred.
Authorities said debris removal operations are continuing and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
