New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pravesh Wahi has been elected as the new Mayor of Delhi, while Monika Pant has been elected as the Deputy Mayor, following elections held in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House.
Pravesh Wahi secured a decisive victory, defeating Congress candidate Zarif by a margin of 147 votes. Out of 165 votes cast, Wahi received 156 votes, while Zarif secured 9 votes, with no invalid votes reported. Wahi, a councillor from Ward No. 53 (Rohini-East), has previously served as Leader of the House in the MCD.
Monika Pant, also from the BJP, was elected as Deputy Mayor. Meanwhile, three members of the Standing Committee—Jai Bhagwan Yadav (Ward 27, Begumpur), Manish Chaddha (Ward 82), and AAP councillor Jalaj Kumar (Ward 55)—were elected unopposed. The Aam Aadmi Party did not participate in the mayoral and deputy mayoral elections.
Focus on Cleanliness, Infrastructure and Public Services
In his first statement after being elected, Mayor Pravesh Wahi expressed gratitude to the party leadership and reaffirmed the BJP-led MCD’s commitment to improving civic services across Delhi.
He announced that the corporation will procure advanced sanitation machinery worth ₹50 crore to strengthen cleanliness operations. Strict action will also be taken against contractors who fail to maintain sanitation standards.
Wahi emphasized that priority will be given to improving cleanliness, ensuring quality education, and strengthening primary healthcare services. He also highlighted the need to address legacy waste at landfill sites and resolve long-standing sanitation challenges.
Development and Coordination Push
The Mayor stated that all stakeholders will work together to upgrade roads, parks, and other civic infrastructure across the city. “We believe in action and will demonstrate our commitment through results,” he said, seeking cooperation from all sections.
He further noted that the Delhi Government is extending full support to the MCD, and better coordination between agencies will help enhance service delivery for citizens.
Deputy Mayor Monika Pant thanked the leadership and assured that she would work in the public interest.
Leader of the House Jai Bhagwan Yadav said development works will be accelerated and efforts will be made to improve civic amenities and increase MCD revenue.
