Ludhiana/Delhi: Sanjeev Arora has officially stepped down as a Member of the Rajya Sabha following his election as MLA from Ludhiana West. In accordance with constitutional provisions that bar holding dual memberships in Parliament and a State Legislature, Arora submitted his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar at the Vice President’s Enclave in New Delhi — seven days before the 14-day constitutional deadline post-Gazette notification on June 24, 2025.
Arora, who represented Punjab in the Upper House since April 10, 2022, thanked the people of Punjab, his parliamentary colleagues, and the Rajya Sabha Chairman for their trust and cooperation. “It has been an honour and privilege to serve as a Member of the Rajya Sabha,” he said in his resignation letter, highlighting the rich experience he gained during his tenure.

The move marks a key political transition for the Aam Aadmi Party leader as he shifts focus to state-level governance. Arora won the June 19 Ludhiana West bypoll by a margin of 10,637 votes, a seat that fell vacant after the sudden demise of the sitting MLA. His nomination was backed by AAP’s top leadership, citing his impactful parliamentary track record.
During his term in the Rajya Sabha, Arora maintained an 80% attendance rate—on par with the national average and ahead of the state’s 77%. He participated in 82 debates (national average: 79.8; state: 44.6), raised 229 questions (national average: 134.22; state: 204), and introduced one Private Member’s Bill.
Arora’s performance is being seen as a major reason for his decisive electoral win, where he polled 43.34% more votes than his nearest rival, Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
The Vice President’s office confirmed the acceptance of his resignation in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), formally concluding Arora’s nearly three-year stint in the Rajya Sabha.
