New Delhi: In a major development in the Janakpuri accident case, Delhi Police have registered an FIR against a private contractor and concerned officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) after a 25-year-old bank employee died after falling into a deep, uncovered trench dug in the middle of the road.
The deceased, identified as Kamal Dhyani, lost his life after his two-wheeler plunged into a more than 15-foot-deep pit allegedly left open by the Delhi Jal Board without barricades, warning signs, or safety covers. The incident occurred late at night while Kamal was returning home from work.

According to police sources, the case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with causing death by negligence. Police said the trench was excavated as part of DJB work and was abandoned in an unsafe condition, directly leading to the fatal accident.
Investigators stated that no reflective markers, barricading, or caution boards were placed at the site, making the trench nearly invisible at night. Kamal’s family has alleged that the absence of basic safety measures amounts to gross negligence by civic authorities.
Kamal’s brother said the victim had left office early to celebrate his parents’ wedding anniversary but never reached home. Despite his last known location being available, the family claims no immediate search effort was made.
Reacting strongly to the incident, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed the death “not an accident, but a killing,” and wrote on social media that “the real culprit is not the road, but an irresponsible system.”
Delhi Police said the investigation is being conducted seriously and assured that strict legal action would be taken against all those found responsible. Officials are examining contractor agreements, duty rosters, and safety compliance records related to the excavation work.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about civic accountability, road safety, and unchecked negligence in public infrastructure projects across the capital.
