New Delhi: A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly strangling and burning his 19-year-old neighbour in Delhi’s Narela area over repeated threats and abuse, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Sumit, was taken into custody from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, after a manhunt following the discovery of the victim’s half-burnt body near the Narela-Bawana flyover on June 29. The deceased, Kapil Dahiya, was found lying next to his partially charred motorcycle, police confirmed.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami, Sumit, along with his associates Vishal and Harish, allegedly lured Dahiya to an isolated field. The trio then strangled him and set his body on fire in an attempt to conceal the victim’s identity and destroy evidence.
A PCR call at around 3 PM on June 29 alerted the authorities. A police team along with forensic experts reached the spot and began gathering evidence. Based on identification by Dahiya’s father, a case was registered at Narela Police Station under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 238(b) (destruction of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Sumit was later arrested and during questioning confessed to the crime, stating he feared for his and his brother’s safety due to ongoing threats from Dahiya.
Police recovered Sumit’s mobile phone and the clothes he wore during the crime. The victim’s burnt motorcycle had already been seized from the crime scene. Efforts are on to trace and apprehend the absconding co-accused and to locate the victim’s missing mobile phone.
Sumit has been remanded to two-day police custody as the investigation continues.
