New Delhi: In a significant development, a man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 50 lakh from a businessman in East Delhi, according to police reports released on Sunday.
Ramkumar, a 58-year-old owner of an electrical shop in Vinod Nagar, lodged a complaint on May 17, detailing a harrowing encounter with two men who threatened him and his sons at his shop on May 11.
One of the assailants, who identified himself as Kartar Bhati, claimed to have committed a murder and demanded Rs 50 lakh while brandishing a pocket diary that contained the addresses of both Ramkumar’s home and shop. The police statement revealed that Bhati, recently released from prison, warned Ramkumar that he would suffer the same fate as a man named Bhure if the money was not paid. This threat was reiterated through a social media call on May 16.
In response to the complaint, an FIR was registered at the Madhu Vihar Police Station. A specialized team was assembled to investigate the matter, employing CCTV footage analysis and technical surveillance to identify the suspects.
Through their efforts, the police identified the primary suspect as Kartar Bhati, a resident of Jamalpur village in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, along with his accomplice, Nadir, also known as Sah Alam. Bhati was subsequently apprehended, and several pieces of incriminating evidence were recovered during his arrest.
Authorities revealed that Bhati is a habitual offender with a criminal history that includes seven prior cases involving murder, robbery, and firearms offenses. He had been released from prison in September 2024.
Further investigation has uncovered that a man named Rahul, also known as Bhura, was murdered in 2020 in West Vinod Nagar. This information was provided by Bhati. The case was subsequently registered at the Mandawali police station, and authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
