Rekha Government Plans Major Traffic Decongestion Drive in Delhi — MLAs Asked to Identify Jam-Prone Spots and Priority Projects

Date:

New Delhi: To tackle Delhi’s chronic traffic congestion, the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government has rolled out a comprehensive plan aimed at identifying and resolving bottlenecks across all districts of the national capital.

As part of this new traffic decongestion initiative, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma has written to all 70 MLAs of Delhi, asking them to pinpoint major traffic choke points in their constituencies and submit a list of priority projects within 15 days. The move is part of a pre-budget exercise to ensure that high-impact infrastructure works are included in the upcoming financial plan for FY 2026–27.

According to PWD officials, the department has already received proposals for new flyovers and road-elevation projects from three key areas of the city. Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh has requested a flyover in Mangolpuri, citing severe congestion as the area connects Rohini, Pitampura, and Nangloi. He stated that traffic remains clogged during morning and evening hours and that only a flyover could provide lasting relief.

In South Delhi, the department has also received proposals for road elevation along Chhatarpur Road to SSN Road, where vehicles crawl during peak hours. Another proposal suggests raising the 100-foot Chhatarpur Road up to the IGNOU Gate to ease movement towards Qutub Minar and Gurugram.

The PWD minister has sought similar inputs not only on traffic congestion but also on road repair, drainage improvement, new underpasses, and the construction of schools and hospitals. Once all suggestions are received, the department will conduct feasibility studies and allocate budgets accordingly.

Officials said that integrating local inputs with citywide planning will help ensure that “the real needs of Delhi’s commuters are addressed effectively and sustainably.”

If implemented successfully, this initiative could bring much-needed relief to Delhi residents who spend hours stuck in traffic daily, improving both commute times and air quality.
