Mayor Slams AAP for Disruption, Announces MCD Committee Elections on August 6–7

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh announced that elections for the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson posts of Special and Ad-hoc Committees of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be held on August 6 and 7, with the last date for nominations set for July 31.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, the Mayor confirmed that elections for 12 Special Committees and 11 Ad-hoc Committees were successfully conducted in the MCD’s special House session earlier in the day, and all nominations were found valid.

However, he alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) attempted to derail the proceedings of the House by creating a ruckus, a pattern of behaviour he said has become routine. “AAP is not interested in constructive debate,” he said, accusing the party of “deliberately avoiding discussion” despite having opportunities to raise objections.

The Mayor noted that a proposal to nominate three members each to the Education Committee and the Ad-hoc Committee for Scheduled Caste welfare was tabled, but the AAP chose disruption over engagement.

“AAP has consistently obstructed the House’s functioning to derail decisions made in public interest,” Singh said. He further alleged that during AAP’s 2.5-year tenure in the MCD, the party intentionally withheld the formation of Committees, aiming to concentrate power centrally rather than empower decentralised civic functioning.

In contrast, Singh asserted, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) initiated the committee formation process promptly after assuming control, underscoring its commitment to inclusive governance and decentralisation of authority.

“The House should function through discussion, not disruption,” the Mayor concluded, urging elected representatives to uphold democratic norms.
