New Delhi: A 36-year-old businessman, Shivam Gupta, succumbed to his injuries after being brutally assaulted with a helmet during a late-night altercation in Connaught Place Inner Circle, Delhi, police said.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 1:30 am on the night of January 2–3, near Metro Gate No. 4 in the Connaught Place parking area. Shivam Gupta, a resident of Laxmi Nagar, had reportedly gone out with friends and was returning when a verbal altercation broke out with three youths riding a motorcycle.
Police said the argument escalated quickly, following which the attackers allegedly used a helmet as a weapon, repeatedly striking Shivam on the head. The assailants fled the scene after leaving him critically injured.
A PCR call was received shortly thereafter, and police teams rushed to the spot. Shivam Gupta was immediately shifted to hospital, where he underwent surgery. He remained under treatment for nearly 17 days, battling for life, before succumbing to his injuries on January 19.
Family members have alleged that the attackers knowingly targeted the head and continued to strike despite being aware that such blows could prove fatal. Police stated that multiple CCTV cameras installed across the Connaught Place area were examined to trace the movements of the suspects.
Based on CCTV footage and other evidence, two accused have been arrested so far. Police said the investigation is continuing and all aspects of the case, including the role of other individuals and the sequence of events, are being thoroughly examined.
