New Delhi: MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar has directed officials to take strict penal action against construction agencies and repeat violators over dust-control lapses, following a joint inspection of South Zone pollution hotspots ahead of winter.

Khirwar and Delhi government’s Urban Development Secretary Vivek Pandey reviewed pollution-control work around RK Puram and IIT Delhi, as well as construction sites in Sarojini Nagar and on Ring Road, according to MCD’s account of the inspection.

Construction dust measures under scrutiny

The team assessed anti-pollution measures at and around construction sites, including the deployment of anti-smog guns, sprinklers and MRSM machines. Khirwar asked site officials and departments to strengthen dust mitigation and related works through better coordination.

His directions included strict penal action against building agencies and repeated violators for lapses. The inspection reviewed the prevailing pollution situation around hotspots and the measures being undertaken by different government agencies before winter.

Departments told to coordinate and monitor action

At a subsequent meeting at the MCD South Zone office, Deputy Commissioner Shashwat Saurabh briefed Pandey on pollution conditions, identified sources and contributing factors, and corrective measures undertaken so far.

Pandey reviewed action taken by the departments and emphasised closer coordination, continuous monitoring and prompt intervention at pollution hotspots. Officials were also directed to ensure that local measures were implemented effectively and monitored regularly.

The inspection involved senior officials and representatives of the Delhi administration, NDMC, DDA, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Traffic Police and other concerned departments, alongside the South Zone team.

Clear pedestrian routes and deep-clean vulnerable stretches

During visits around IIT Delhi and a nearby petrol pump, officials were instructed to carry out regular anti-encroachment drives to ensure safe passage for pedestrians.

The directions also called for intensive and deep cleaning of roads, footpaths, green belts and other vulnerable locations ahead of winter, as part of the coordinated pollution-control effort.
