New Delhi: The death toll in the dargah wall collapse near Humayun’s Tomb in Nizamuddin rose to seven on Saturday after another victim succumbed to injuries during treatment, police confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred at Dargah Sharif Patte Shah around 3:30 pm on Friday, when a portion of the roof and wall collapsed due to heavy rains. At least 15 people had taken shelter inside the premises at the time of the collapse.
Victims Identified Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said the deceased include four men and three women. Sources identified five victims as Swaroop Chand (79), Moinuddin (37), Anita Saini (58), Meena Arora (56) and her daughter Monu Arora (25). The deceased were residents of Malkaganj, Bhogal, and Vasant Kunj Enclave.
While five victims died at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, one each succumbed at LNJP Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital.
The five injured were identified as Mohammad Shameem, Aryan, Gudiya, Rafat Parveen, and Rani (65).
DCP Tiwari said a case has been registered under sections 290 (negligent conduct with respect to buildings), 125 (endangering human life), and 106 (causing death by negligence) against unidentified persons.
He added that two rooms of the dargah were in a dilapidated condition, and the heavy rainfall triggered the collapse. “Twelve people were rescued from the debris. Nine were admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre, one to LNJP, and one to RML Hospital,” Tiwari said.
The dargah, which shares its boundary with the 16th-century Mughal monument Humayun’s Tomb, has now been cordoned off. Civic agencies have been informed, and a detailed probe is underway to ascertain responsibility.
