New Delhi: At a review meeting of the ‘Delhi Ko Koode Se Azadi’ cleanliness campaign held at the Civic Centre, Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh expressed unhappiness over the lack of public participation in the drive, even as he praised the tireless efforts of sanitation workers across all MCD zones.
The Mayor emphasized that Safai Karamcharis are the backbone of MCD’s sanitation system, noting that they continue to work relentlessly under all conditions to keep the city clean. He urged citizens to play a bigger role in complementing these efforts, especially during the ongoing Swachhta Pakhwada which concludes on October 2.

Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee Speak on Participation
Deputy Mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav credited the success of the campaign so far to the hard work of sanitation staff and public involvement, stressing that cleanliness is a primary responsibility of every citizen.
Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma also praised sanitation workers for ensuring garbage collection last month but highlighted that citizen participation is crucial:
“Sanitation workers are making all efforts on the ground, but public involvement is vital to ensure our streets remain garbage-free,” she said.
House Leader’s Directions to Staff
MCD Leader of House Pravesh Wahi directed zonal sanitation staff to identify at least five garbage-prone areas in each ward—a step that would target over 10,000 vulnerable points in the city within two weeks. He also appealed for enhanced deployment of manpower and resources for waste disposal, stating that with the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and support of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the city’s cleanliness system will be further strengthened.
Commissioner Commends Safai Karamcharis
MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar lauded the Safai Karamcharis for maintaining cleanliness even in hard-to-reach areas like slums, JJ clusters, railway track zones, and office complexes. He emphasized that their continuous work has made a visible difference in the city’s hygiene.
Key Takeaway
While sanitation workers received praise for their dedication, the Mayor’s remarks served as a reminder that without active public participation, Delhi’s vision of becoming a truly clean and green city cannot be fully realized.
